By now, you have likely seen or heard something about Netflix's new A24 series, “Beef”. The show stars an epic cast, including Ali Wong, Steven Yeun, Joseph Lee, Maria Bello, David Choe, Young Mazino, and Ashley Park.
However, if you haven't, I’m here to urge you to take the time to dive into this superbly crafted series, TODAY. Over the past weekend, I binged the entire show with my boyfriend, who knew nothing about it going in. By the end, I was left in a puddle of tears and was completely wrecked. (No joke, I’m still moved to tears when I talk about it.)
The synopsis is simple: a road rage incident between two strangers, a failing contractor, and an unfulfilled entrepreneur, sparks a feud that brings out their darkest impulses.
Created by Lee Sung Jin, it explores a range of themes, including our fundamental need as human beings to truly connect and to be seen and not judged. It does so in the most inventive, entertaining, wild, magnificent, and ultimately, heartfelt of ways possible.
Without spoiling anything, I'll keep this short and sweet: please watch “Beef” and come back here to share your thoughts and experience of watching it in the comments. (Trust me, there's so much to say!)
Oh, and let me make a prediction: Lee Sung Jin, Ali Wong, Steven Yeun, and yes, David Choe, all deserve every single award when the Award Season takes off later this year. Mark my words.
Great concise summary. I don't have to ask, "Where's the beef?"
Just finished it last night and found it so heartbreaking. A tragedy in the classic sense in that every character is so well drawn and fallible and human, but their flaws escalate the crisis and they all stand to lose so much because of it. The acting and writing and visual sense of style is fantastic and the 90s soundtrack really brought me back!
